Introduction to Sexuality and Disability

An introduction to the basics of sexuality and disability. This workshop is intended for workers new to the social services field or new to the topic of sexuality and disability. We will discuss the realities of what your role is, challenge your thinking about sexuality and disability and identify our own values systems and how they impact the way we work. This course does NOT cover teaching sexual health or working as a team member specifically supporting sexual health. Cost: On-site at SHADE Consulting – $159.00 per person including GST (Includes coffee and snacks) - 10% discount for groups of 5 or more people from the same organization/community team

At your location – $159.00 per person including GST PLUS travel costs of $35.00 per hour PLUS $0.50 per kilometer plus any other applicable expenses

Program Development (for children, adolescents, adults)

This workshop is designed for people with educational training and a solid understanding of pedagogy. We will focus on what needs to be taught, resources that are available and designing your own program for the class you are teaching now. Classes will be offered specifically for children, adolescent and adult program development. Classes will be offered over 4 weeks - 2 hours per week. By request, this course can be offered as a one day workshop.

Talk About Touch - Abuse Prevention and Identification

This workshop explores the issues of touch, the role of support staff with persons with disabilities and the considerations families and care providers need to consider when dealing with intimate care issues. Participants will learn about what current resources might be helpful, the signs of abuse and what to do if you suspect abuse of a family member or client.

Policy Development

This workshop is designed for executive directors, managers, administrators or senior staff to discuss the need for a comprehensive human sexuality policy within their agencies. The reasons for a policy will be presented as well as the basics of what needs to be included in a policy (topics that should be covered, responsibilities stated, etc) in order to make it comprehensive and effective. We will also discuss how to ensure that the staff working within an agency are familiar with the policy and enabled to follow through on policy with the population that they serve. Although the focus on many of these policies is around adults and sexual health, we will explore what is needed for policy within agencies which also serve children and adolescents. We will also explore how to communicate agency policy to families in a manner that is respectful of family values and still conveys policy and the rights of the individuals served.
